Tuks takes the trophies at the RMB Buffalo Regatta 2023

A clean sweep for Tuks at the 135th RMB Buffalo Regatta

The 2023 RMB Buffalo Regatta took place from 9 to 11 February at the East London Boating Association (ELBA).

Row SATwo-time Olympian, Jake Green of Tuks, managed to keep his hand on the prize, winning the Silver Sculls and Grand Challenge trophies for the second consecutive year.

“The Grand Challenge and Silver Sculls are the most prestigious events in South African men’s rowing and only the best rowers our country produces get to hold those trophies,” says Green.

The conditions were challenging and the competition was high, with 34 national clubs and 735 athletes taking part. Still, the University of Pretoria (Tuks) took a clean sweep.

The finals of the Silver Sculls, the senior men’s scull race, saw a battle between RMB National Squad teammates, with Jake Green taking gold just four seconds ahead of Murray Bales-Smith in a time of 7m 56s. Third place went to Christopher Baxter in 8m 09.6s.

In the Grand Challenge for the senior men’s coxless four, the Tuks team took first place. The team, made up of Jake Green, Christopher Baxter, John Smith and Thabelo Masutha, are all currently part of the RMB National Squad.

Tuks dominated in the women’s single scull as well, securing first, second and third positions. Katherine Williams won in 8m 33.9s just a few seconds ahead of Paige Badenhorst (8m 37.8s) with Courtney Westley taking third in 8m 44.4s.

The senior women’s coxless four was won by the Tuks team comprising Paige Badenhorst, Courtney Westley, Jade Alves and Bridgette Kappler in 8m 39.35s.
